SLOOP

The Sloop was fast, agile, and had a shallow draft.  Her size could be as large as 100 tons.  She was generally rigged with a large mainsail which was attached to a spar above, to the mast on its foremost edge, and to a long boom below.  She could sort additional sails both square and lateen-rigged.  She was used mainly in the Caribbean and Atlantic.  Today's sailing Yacht is essentially a sloop.

JOLLY ROGER FLAG

The original Jolly Roger is one of the prized pieces within the St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum collection. Dated 1850, this Jolly Roger is only one of two pirate flags ever recovered.

CARIBBEAN HUMMER

* 1 oz Light Rum
* 1 oz Dark Rum
* 0.5 oz Scotch
* 0.5 oz Pineapple Juice
* Pour over ice in a Collins glass
* Stir and fill glass with 7-Up

Sugar cane - the main ingredient in rum - was brought to the Caribbean, where most of the famous spirit is now produced, by Spanish explorers.  It is believed that Christopher Columbus planted it on his second voyage to Cuba and Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). 

Longboat [lawng-boht] - An open boat to be rowed by eight to ten oarsmen.  It was stored on a sailing vessel and used to transport sailors on and off the vessel.

Merchantman [mur-chuhnt-muhn] - A large merchant vessel used to transport valuable cargo owned by wealthy businessmen.

No Quarter [no kwawr-ter] - No mercy and no clemency of sparing life upon surrender.

Spanish Main [span-ish meyn] - The mainland of the American continent enclosing the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
