Did you know?

  • Blackbeard used grenades when he attacked a ship. His crew packed empty glass bottles with black powder, shot, and peices of lead. The explosion would do little damage to the prize but cause havoc and brutal injuries to the prey's crew.

  • Pirates had the original democracy. The crew voted on the captain (executive branch) and the quartermaster (judicial branch), and they were the legislative branch, voting on all ship issues.

  • A typical 4-pounder (cannon) could fire a roundshot (cannonball) about 1,000 yards, but maximum accuracy was only about 500 feet.

  • The specialized design of the hilt of the cutlass, not only protected the pirate's hand, but was also a brutally effective "steel fist" with which to strike enemies in the face.
